It was founded in 1983; when the Asian Cricket Council was established with an objective to propagate and promote goodwill among the Asian countries. At the time of initiation of this championship, it was planned to hold it every two years. In 1984, the opening tournament was hosted in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates where the offices of the Council were situated, till 1995. As per the approval of The International Cricket Council, all games contested in the Asia Cup have official status of One Day International. India has the reputation of winning the tournament for highest number of times. India partook in all the editions of the cup, except 1986 when India withdrew due to uncomfortable cricketing relations with Sri Lanka and 1993 as the championship was cancelled in view of strained political relations between India and Pakistan. In accordance with ruling of the ACC, the tournament has been staged once in every two years from 2008 onwards. The inaugural Asia Cup in 1984 featured a round-robin tournament between India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The first match was played by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the then new ICC member. India was the winner of this inaugural edition, with two victories. Sri Lanka staged the second edition of Asia Cup Cricket in 1986. Sri Lanka, thus, hosted its first multi-national cricket tournament. India had abstained from participating in the tournament due to stressed cricketing relations with Sri Lanka following a controversial series during the previous year, there. Bangladesh had come into the tournament for the first time. Sri Lanka defeating Pakistan in the finals became the champion of the cup. The third Asia Cricket Cup was held in Bangladesh, in 1988, and turned out to be the first multi-national cricket tournament hosted there. India overpowered Sri Lanka by six wickets, in the final, and won their second Asia Cup. India staged in 1990-90 the fourth edition of the Asia Cricket Cup. Owing to uncomfortable political relations with India, Pakistan had opted out of the tournament. India retained the Cup winning over Sri Lanka in the final. The tournament could not take place in 1993 because of the unhealthy political relations shared by India and Pakistan. The fifth edition staged in 1995, carried back the tournament to Sharjah after a lapse of 11 years. India and Sri Lanka entered the final on the basis of better run rate over Pakistan as all three teams had accumulated equal points at the conclusion of the preliminary round. India once again defeated Sri Lanka in the final for the third time in a row in the Asia Cup, to surface as winners. In 1997 Sri Lanka organised the sixth edition and defeated India in the final by eight wickets to win its second Asia Cup and impede India's third victory in a row. The seventh edition of the Asia Cup was hosted by Bangladesh in 2000 and happened to be its second. The final was played by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while India had failed to qualify for the first time as it had won only one match against Bangladesh. In the final, Pakistan won over Sri Lanka and lifted the Asia Cup for the first time. The eighth edition occurred in Sri Lanka, in 2004 after a lapse of four years from the seventh edition of the championship. This tournament had undergone certain modifications as regards its format in this edition. The other Asian countries, UAE and Hong Kong, were also integrated for the first time. The competition was divided into three stages, i.e. the group stage, the round robin Super Four and the final. The group stage was further split into two groups of three teams, requiring every team to play every other team once. The top ranked two teams from each group qualified for the Super Four stage where they competed with each other once again. The best performing two teams in the Super Four stage then proceeded to the final. Hosts Sri Lanka, India and UAE were placed in Group A. The defending champion Pakistan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong were positioned in Group B. Sri Lank, Pakistan, UAE and Hong Kong were packed off in the group stage. Bangladesh, though reached the second stage in a major tournament for the first time, was eliminated in the Super Four. India and Sri Lanka being the two best teams in the Super Four stage contested the final. Sri Lanka won against India by 25 runs in the Final to capture the Asia Cup. Pakistan staged the ninth edition of the Asia Cup. The 2004 tournament format was sustained in this edition also. The tournament got under way on June 24 2008 and concluded on July 6 2008. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh top ranked in Group A, qualified for the second phase. In Group B, India and Pakistan being top teams entered the Super Four. Sri Lanka and India topped the Super Four stage and played the final. Sri Lanka defeated India in the final to equal India’s record of four Asia Cup trophies. The tenth edition of Asia Cup was hosted by Sri Lanka, for the fourth time, from June 15 to June 24 2010. This edition involved only the four Test playing Asian nations, and seven matches (including final) were played totally. Sri Lanka and India were the highest placed teams of the group stages and contested the final. India defeated Sri Lanka comfortably to become Asia Cup champions for a record fifth time, though the first time in 15 years. The eleventh edition of Asia Cup was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 11 to March 22 2012. Pakistan and Bangladesh made it to the final. Balyakalasakhi Movie Review - Do Not Miss This! Written by: Ajin Krishna Published: Friday, February 7, 2014, 20:20 [IST] Ads by Google Rating: 3.5/5 Pramod Payyannur's Balyakalasakhi, the cinematic adaptation of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer's well known novel of the same name, with Mammootty and Isha Talwar in the lead is a near excellent adaptation of the novel backed with some wonderful performances. Story Balyakalasakhi is a pure love story revolving around Majeed (Mammootty) and Suhra (Isha Talwar) which begins from their childhood. The movie begins with Majeed searching a job in Kolkata. He loses his money and bag on the way, but is helped by Selvi (Seema Biswas) , who introduces him to Ameen Sahib (Sasikumar). Ameen Sahib gives Majeed a job in his press. Majeed meets Shabnam (Thanusree Ghosh) , daughter of Ameen Sahib and Praful (Preim Sheikh), a rebel and a writer. Rest of the story deals with the flashback of the love story between Majeed and Suhra and how and where life takes them. Balyakalasakhi Movie Review Performances Mammootty, in his double role of Majeed and his father is the pick among many. He has enacted the character of Majeed to near perfection. Isha Talwar as Suhra has improved much from her earlier films and has come out good. Rest of the cast including Seema Biswas, Sasikumar, Thanusree Ghosh, Meena (Majeed's mother), Preim Sheikh, Sunil Sukhada (Avaraan), Kavitha Nair (Suhra's mom), Mamukkoya (Narayana Pilla) have done full justice to their roles. Also special mention goes to Parambrata Chatterjee and other young and child artists. Technical Aspects Cinematography by Hari Nair is near flawless. He has captured the scenic beauty of the village and the streets of Kolkata with much brilliance. Music by the late legend Raghavan Master and Shahabaz Aman is a treat for music lovers. All songs, especially Thamarapponkavanathil and Kalam Parakkanu are sure to live long in the mind of music lovers. For the cinematic version, Pramod Payyannur have done a lot of compromise. The first half which leaves us spellbound doesn't have that charm in the second half. Though the movie was said to be for 120 minutes, it has further been cut short. Editing also seems bit faltered as many sequences have been unexpectedly cut short. Still, Pramod Payyannur can be proud of making such a good movie of such a heart warming love story written by a legend. Verdict Do watch this movie. class acting from megastar
